When I go to Costco I can put anything I want on my cart. Nobody cares if I put three 72 inch plasma 3d TVs (Do they still call them TVs?) on my cart.
But if I try to take those TVs out of the store without a receipt for them the guy at the door gets a real hostile attitude. For some reason Costco takes exception to people taking stuff out of their store without evidence that they have payed for it. I guess that is how they protect themselves from thieves.
Now suppose there are people who say we have a deity and all of you guys should do what we say, because our deity says so. Our natural response should rightly be one of questioning. How can we know that their deity is real and not imaginary, and why should we do what their deity says? If they can't produce any reasonable evidence for their claims, then we would be wise not to listen to them.
Why should we do that when they are such nice people who have done so many wonderful things? Some of them are even united with us politically.
Answer on the flip.
The reason why we should tell deists who wish to obligate us to their deity without providing evidence to go away and leave us alone is because that is how we protect ourselves from fools and scoundrels who would have us take leave of our reason.
So I for one have resolved to check every idea for a receipt. If you want me to put an idea my head I will ask you for a receipt. If the idea appeals to reason then I am inclined to accept the idea. If the idea does not appeal to reason then I am inclined to reject the idea.
The problem is religious ideas and those who hold them. They read from their holy books and say isn't this a good idea, see how sweet this sounds. Therefore let's follow this book. Then some skeptic comes along and asks for the receipt for that book. The religious person gets mad. How dare you ask for a receipt for this book. It has been in my family for generations and I'm a progressive. We don't need receipts. We're on your side. Don't break up the family.
The skeptic responds, but books without receipts are the problem. All kinds of nuts have all kinds of books and none of them have any receipts. The books say the stupidest damn things but people still go by them because they are sure a deity gave it to them.
Not my book the believer says. You're persecuting me. Don't you want me on your side?
The skeptic responds sure I want you on my side but I'm not interested in your book or anything it has to say, unless you can show me a receipt.
