Trinidad Jimenez, the Foreign Minister of Spain, told Mahmud Abbas today that Spain supports efforts to seek recognition of a Palestinian State in September.
Calling the bid for UN recognition "legitimate", Jimenez said that Spain would determine its position "based on the proposals that arise, in a constructive spirit". Abbas also met with King Juan Carlos, and tomorrow will meet with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
According to this disturbing report, which deserves a diary of its own, 118 nations so far plan to recognize Palestine as an independent state in September. I don't know if this count already includes Spain, since the Jimenez statement seems to imply a decision has not been firmly made on the subject.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of the meeting with Zapatero tomorrow. Next stop for Abbas is Barcelona, where he will meet with Morocco's Youssef Amrani, head of the Union for the Mediterranean, and then he will be off to Turkey.
