For those distracted by the other major news of the day, they might not have heard that Norway has been struck by multiple attacks. At least one large carbomb went off in downtown Oslo targeting the political headquarters of the government and a gunman opened fire at a youth camp run by the ruling party.
At least 17 are dead including children and more injured. The gunman has been taken into custody and is a Norwegian described as having a Scandanavian look who was allegedly seen near the explosion before it occured. While details are still sketchy, it sounds like the work of a lone wolf who does not fit the profile at all.
With that said, the Long War Journal(Weekly Standard affiliate), which tracks jihadist forums, notes that a recent jihadist posting claims credit for the assault. The reason given is Norway's continued contrbution of troops to NATO and its ISAF mission in Afghanistan. This could just be someone trying to take credit for another's evil as the cause of today's terror has yet to be known.
Norway has been targeted before by terrorists affiliated with al Qaeda. Last year, several suspects were arrested. Norway was amongst the countries who's newspapers published cartoons considered offensive to Islam.
With all that said, best wait for Norway to say what led to today's horror.
