ShelterBox is stepping up its response to the drought throughout the Horn of Africa.
According to UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), 10.7 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance across the region. A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is already operating in Ethiopia and a second team is now en route to Kenya.
SRT members Peter Pearce (AU) and Ingrid Criddle (UK) arrive in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, on July 19. They will be working with the NRC (Norwegian Refugee Council) and Rotarians to establish what assistance ShelterBox can give to the growing crisis.
Food, medicine, water and sanitation all remain a priority but with an estimated 1,500 people a day arriving at refugee camps the need for quality, emergency shelter is growing by the day.
Ingrid Criddle, on her second ShelterBox deployment, said partnering with other agencies, who have a long-term presence in Kenya, will be key to ensuring aid reaches the families in most need as quickly as possible.
‘With this new and large scale influx of displaced people we envisage there being an immediate need for the aid we offer,’ she said. ‘Our first priority will be to tap into the exisiting humanitarian network in Kenya and work with them according to the ongoing needs.’
The Response Team operating in Ethiopia are following the same operational procedure and working with agencies already established on the ground.
ShelterBox Founder and CEO, Tom Henderson, said: ‘The situation in the Horn of Africa is incredibly complex and it’s imperative the international humanitarian community work in unison to bring aid to those people in need.
‘Our operations team is working around the clock to coordinate our response and we are in the position to respond in whatever capacity is required of us.’
