At my age new friends are a rarity and the old ones are scattered. So, at times I find myself longing to have the kind of friends I used to have because even though I love my family I really do need variety. I'm beginning to think that true friends are as rare as real love.

There are times in life when you meet someone and really hit it off. The problem occurs when you don't stay in touch...as I found out recently. I had met someone in the spring of 2010 while working for the U.S. Census as a recruiter. Matt and his friend Joe ran a coffee shop for an absentee owner in my small town. They roasted and sold some really great coffee. But the pay wasn't much to brag about. I would stop by every day and I really enjoyed our conversations...intelligent, snarky brilliant conversations about anything and everything. The thing was both these guys were younger than my oldest son and as young as my youngest son. Eventually I recruited both to work in the Census...for me as it turned out. Great guys but they just didn't have time as there were problems at their day job (another time perhaps). Eventually they both quit the Census and then lost their jobs at the coffee shop when it was sold. The Joe moved on to California and I didn't see Matt until over a year later (yesterday) and it was like seeing a long lost friend...even though we'd known each other for just a few months. We fell right back into the same superior conversations.
Here's the odd part...he lives just 2 block away...and yet I didn't make time to visit him and he didn't bother either. We both lead busy lives with our family but not so much that we couldn't have tried. Now he's moving to a town 30 miles away. And I wonder if maybe I just lost an opportunity to have that kind friend I mentioned at the beginning. DAMN!
BTW it turns out for over a year he has been making an online comic called "Made in the USA". It's quite brilliant and can be found here: http://madeinusa.fitzh2o.com/
I was absolutely floored at the level of talent the guy has. So, I thought I would share with my fellow Kossacks. Give it a look...he's quite talented and even though it's a period piece it's relevant in todays current political climate
Enjoy!!!!!!
