Here's a short "feel-good" story about daily small steps towards a sustainable energy future. Alex Davies calls our attention to 100% Wind and Solar Powered Billboards Come to London, New York & Sydney, in Tree Hugger.
Although, this a small development in terms of the total amount of energy saved, symbolically, it raises awareness, and remedies a moral issue as well. As, I've traveled around the world, often to impoverished countries, on the roads from the airports to the big cities, one sees, glowing, highly lit billboards, often rising above shacks that don't have any electricity at all.
Additionally, the generation of deadly CO2 into our atmosphere during this time of emerging crisis, often makes one want to remember the advertisers so we can not buy their products, for such misallocation of resources, and irresponsibility.
So, now we can wallow in, and enjoy crass consumerism on a whole new scale, free from guilt about CO2 emissions, and diverting electricity from residential consumers, at least. Plus, this is creating new "solar, and wind jobs."
This week, office solutions company Ricoh unveiled what it is calling the "eco-board" - a billboard powered entirely by solar and wind power in London. Situated on the M4 motorway, the billboard is equipped with 96 solar panels and five wind turbines, and it only lights up when it has produced enough energy to do so. It's not the first of its kind, though- Ricoh has already installed similar billboards in New York and Sydney.
Ricoh, a Japanese company, prides itself on being a green leader. A few years ago, it introduced plant-based plastic printers. In a press release, Ricoh Europe Chairman and CEO Steve Saito said:
At Ricoh, we have been committed to reducing our company's carbon footprint for decades, already achieving zero waste to landfill at European factories back in 2001. We are also focused on encouraging other businesses to adopt sustainable business models that can better our cities, countries and our planet whilst improving productivity and profit.
And, in a humorous, "kicker" Davies, asks what Ricoh is advertising on it's new Ecoboards? "Why, Ricoh's wind and solar powered billboards."
PS I hope folks don't mind me promoting my diaries of the last two days, here at the bottom of this one. Are folks on vacation? Did I offend my readers somehow? My response and feedback are way down. Sorry, if I was either too upset, or not upset enough about the debt-ceiling. Please give me feedback, and I'll improve on all dimensions.
