In the foreseeable future, warfare will be conducted from the sky and the sea only. The country or coalition of countries that possess overwhelming air and sea power will confront threats not necessarily by having boots on the ground
When in February this year - President Obama, after Obtaining a U.N. Security Council resolution announced the American led NATO bombing of Libya to dissuade Muammar Ghaddafi from killing his own people; few gave him any chance of success.
They derided his principled stand to defend helpless Libyans as cowardly and accused him of leading from behind. Today’s event has proven his critics largely wrong and he has been vindicated in the process.
In the foreseeable future, warfare will be conducted from the sky and the sea only. The country or coalition of countries that possess overwhelming air and sea power will confront threats not necessarily by having boots on the ground but by capturing the airspace, exercising a naval blockade, and in the case of the United States and her NATO allies – instituting economic sanctions that will deal a devastating blow on belligerent regimes. This will further exacerbate internal discontent that will empower non-state actors (in this case, disenfranchised Libyans) to take their destiny in their own hands. The result will be no less spectacular than what the world has seen today.
Dictators everywhere should take note that there is no underestimating the power of people crying for freedom.
In Africa, it is important that all of our sit tight leaders take a cue from this and start the process of restoring democratic values and citizen participation in their countries.
This is important, given recent global events that have shown clearly that citizens everywhere prefer the rule of law over the rule of men.
