Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion in my last two posts (here and here), on how we should label the content we all write on this site. What began as a simple "should we use 'stories' or 'diaries'" question turned into some of the best meta discussion I've had the pleasure of reading.
One of the things that struck me in the discussion is how poorly any one word described what we all produce. We write stories, we write diaries, we write articles, we write essays, we write rants and expositions and poetry and jokes and a million other things. Finding a single word that would describe all of that was literally impossible.
I originally shied away from "post" because it's really a verb. "To post". But really, that's what we're all doing. We're posting stuff, like diaries and stories and whatnot. So why not use that word? Not to mention, "post" is already established internet nomenclature: "a blog post".
The change won't be immediate. It's being rolled into a series of upgrades that are months away. I'm a bit sad to make this decision. It's never easy to turn your back on eight years of Daily Kos tradition. But it really was time to come up with nomenclature that better described the kind of content we all produce, and didn't diminish it to an outside audience that scoffed at the seriousness of anyone's "diary".
Thanks for your help. This was hugely helpful, and as you saw, your discussion took me in a direction I never planned on going. I love this stuff. I wish I could cram all of you into our conference room as we continue sketching out the future of the site! I'll definitely be coming back to you guys as we continue to work on ways to improve the site.
