Like everyone else, I know exactly how to save the country.
Come over the fold for three simple ideas that would go a long way to fixing our political and economic problems. Tell me in the comments why it won't work -- other than "The people in power won't allow it to happen."
One: Tax investment income at a higher rate than wages. Although investors are one of the pillars of capitalism, they are not the only important factor. Taxing investment income at a rate higher than wages will not end investment, but it will dramatically improve revenue. Let's face it -- if you put a million dollars into stocks or bonds, you can clearly afford to pay taxes on it. This revenue would fund point 2.
Two: A new WPA. Imagine how many jobs could be created in your community. And every dollar goes right back into the economy.
Three: No corporation with headquarters offshore, or with more than 5% of its domestic services workforce offshore, may receive any State or Federal contracts. If your HQ is offshore, it means one of two things -- you are a legitimate foreign company, or you are avoiding paying your taxes. In neither case should you be getting taxpayer funds. If you are increasing your profits by putting Americans out of work, even if you pay your taxes, you are still part of the problem, and should not be rewarded.
I have other ideas, but these are the fastest and easiest to implement -- if our Corporate Masters™ will allow it. If they really understood long-term thinking, they would, because they would know that operating in a healthy economy is more profitable in the long run than a quick boost to the next quarter by laying off half the workforce.
