The NC Senate just moments ago passed SB 514, which reads in part:
SECTION 1. Article 14 of the North Carolina Constitution is amended by adding the following new section:
"Sec. 6. Marriage.
Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."
The vote, as reported by NC LGBT news publication Q-Notes, was along party lines 30-16, with two three Democratic State Senators on excused absence, meaning they could not vote. The proposed amendment will appear on the statewide primary ballot in May, 2012.
Updated 2:38 PM EDT: Breakdown of the roll call vote now available on the NC General Assembly web site. Vote was strict party lines, with 3 Dems and 1 Repub not voting due to excused absence.
