Google's sponsorship of the Republican debate with Fox News is just another example of media and other organizations supporting this partisan activity. What do we do to express our displeasure with this?
I am upset by the support of the Republican debates and other right-wing causes by companies that I patronize. I stopped shopping at Whole Foods after the CEO of that chain came out in opposition to health care reform. I have stopped using Georgia Pacific products and other products produced by companies owned by the Koch brothers.
The support of recent Republican debates by CNN and Google are even more distressing. The CNN sponsorship with the Tea Party Express is probably the most upsetting, but I don't watch CNN anyway. I will write a letter to express my outrage of their support of this clearly partisan activity in cooperation with that extreme political action committee. But what about Google?
Google has become a defacto search engine for many of us. We do Google searches all the time. Some of us (not me) have Android phones and many of us use GMail. I will write a letter to Google, too, but the first thing I have done is to change my default search engine to Bing. Is Microsoft any better than Google? Probably not, but at least they are not overtly sponsoring the debates - yet.
GMail is my primary e-mail these days, so I am not sure what I am going to do about that? I have a number of Yahoo accounts that I use, so I may begin to move away from GMail to one of my other accounts. And what about YouTube, clearly the leading spot for posting videos? I have never posted anything on YouTube, but I am a user for sure. It's hard to escape Google these days, but I must do something!
