For the science lover, this article from Salon is awesome.
Creationists are about to have even more scientific data to ignore. Researchers from Michigan State University have used “in-depth, genomics-based analysis” to understand how E. coli bacteria developed a mutation that allows it to digest citrate, which the bacteria normally cannot digest with oxygen present. In other words, a group of human beings has watched and outlined the process of evolution for a group of living things. This is kind of a big deal.
Ah, shit, did you just hear the conservative hive mind just fart? My god, no longer is feminist dick shrinking going to occupy Rush's gelatinous mind. No sir, the people that live in that reality found somewhere between religiosity and stupidity are going to have rewind the clocksprings that power their minds and get to work denying science and its socialist agenda.
From the brains at Michigan State:
To decipher the responsible mutations, Blount worked with Richard Lenski, MSU Hannah Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Lenski’s long-term experiment, cultivating cultures of fast-growing E. coli, was launched in 1988 and has allowed him and his teammates to study more than more than 56,000 generations of bacterial evolution.
The experiment demonstrates natural selection at work. And because samples are frozen and available for later study, when something new emerges scientists can go back to earlier generations to look for the steps that happened along the way.
“We first saw the citrate-using bacteria around 33,000 generations,” Lenski explained. “But Zack was able to show that some of the important mutations had already occurred before then by replaying evolution from different intermediate stages. He showed you could re-evolve the citrate-eaters, but only after some of the other pieces of the puzzle were in place.”
Study started in 1988. 56,000 generations. 33,000 generations to see the mutation. That is called scientific experiment science deniers. Such endeavors take brains as well as patience. And funding. Guess who helped fund such thoughtful experiment? That's right conservative rote-bots, the National Science Foundation.
I swear...I felt a tremor...the neocon mind hive just blew up. The gaul, the unmitigated nerve...using tax dollars to LEARN. My god, what will they waste money on next? F-35s? (Oh yeah, killing machines are cool, which use a wealth of science to design and build...but the good kind of science.)
Face it neocons, the world marches on to a scientific beat...better jump on for the ride or you'll get left behind and find that natural selection is a bitch.
