As someone who relatively recently developed an active interest in politics, I have some basic questions for the very engaged group that frequents Daily Kos. What is the best way to make a difference? What works for you? What makes you feel that you are helping the cause?
A very short bit of background: I only began to really pay attention to politics around the time of the run-up to the Iraq war. (Proud to say I was against it all the way.) 2008 was the first time I gave any money to a campaign (Obama and Kos favorite Darcy Burner, who could have been my representative. Darn.) In 2010 I spent about two hours on the phone for Suzan DelBene, who also failed to become my representative, and didn't like it, calling people who were already inundated with political calls. I live in Washington State -- we have a challenging race for governor, plus Darcy Burner is running in another district, so I have interesting choices.
My question then is how to focus my efforts in a way that might actually sway some votes. There are just so many possibilities. The state Democratic Party already calls me for money, and the Obama campaign pings me, and Darcy Burner sent me a request. Only a matter of time before Jay Inslee finds me.
But more than that, I'm curious how people feel about the time they spend. What would you recommend? I really like the idea of just getting Democrats to register and vote and would like to hear from anyone who has tried that.
In short, I am someone who wants to volunteer (and give a little money) and would like some advice regarding how to go about it. Kos followers seem like an incredible resource; I hope some of you can chime in. Thanks.
