Recapping yesterday's action:
There wasn't any!
Looking ahead to today:
There won't be any!
Check it out:
TUESDAY, JANUARY 17TH
On Tuesday, the House will meet at 2:00 p.m. for pro forma business and recess immediately. Votes will be postponed until 6:30 p.m.
Quorum Call - Establishing a quorum in the House of Representatives for the Second Session of the 112th Congress
H.Res. __ - Electing the 36th Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Representatives, Paul Irving (Privileged Resolution)
Special Order Speeches
Not only are they not really doing anything, they're waiting until 6:30 p.m. to do it. That's because they want to give Members the whole day to get themselves back to DC from their districts.
Which is where they were, because they weren't in session. Just sayin'.
Is there any interest in what they're doing today? Some. They're formally convening the second session of the 112th Congress. So that's something. Not much, though. I mean, really, nothing special happens because they're in the second session rather than the first. All the bills introduced in the first session are still live bills in the second. But hey, it's a chance to see a little bit of procedural esoterica.
And it's also kind of interesting that they're electing a new Sergeant-at-Arms. What's a Sergeant-at-Arms do? Browse the Wikipedia entry for a quick run-down. And remember, if Newt Gingrich gets his way, he'll have a role in rounding up judges he doesn't like (and who knows, maybe federal employees, too).
And that's it. That's the whole ball of wax for the day.
