I live in Connecticut, good old blue Connecticut. It is good in many ways. Not perfect, but good. As s resident, I'm a constituent of Senator Joe Lieberman. Did you know that after he was re-elected as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont that the Connecticut State Legislature passed a law in his honor prohibiting any politician to run for an office for which (s)he had already lost in a primary?
Anyway, I know he's a hawk and opposed to any reduction in military force, especially as it might impinge upon our relationship to Israel. So when I saw that today he said
I think there’s a very strong feeling that it’s not going to go into effect.
referring to the deal Congress made last summer about the negotiated consequences of raising the debt ceiling in the case that the Super Committee couldn't agree on how to proceed. Well, they didn't and one of the agreed upon consequences was cutting the military.
So I emailed a letter to him, asking him to step down now, please:
I understood that Congress agreed to certain consequences to raising the debt ceiling last summer if the Super Committee couldn't compromise in how to proceed. They didn't. Now I see that you are saying “I’m very concerned about the defense cuts in sequestration, but it’s also the cuts to nondefense discretionary [that] are also devastating. Ultimately, I think there’s a very strong feeling that it’s not going to go into effect.” In other words, you are not willing to live up to the deal that Congress made? You believe Congress will renege on it's own imposed consequences? Joe, you need to retire, when you can't even support your organization's own policies. Do it now, don't wait for 2013. No more trips with Senator McCain, no more bashing Muslims, no more media appearances. Please retire. Leaving our state with only one Senator for several months is better than two if you are one of them.
I doubt he will, though.
