Why is Romney so reluctant to release his tax returns? He keeps responding with embarrassed, feeble excuses but without any valid reason. Doesn't he realize that the longer he waits, the more it becomes a bigger deal when he actually shows them? In the media oyster, foot dragging makes a story bigger; it doesn't sweep it under the rug.
A variety of sources have estimated Romney's net worth in the neighborhood of $200 to $400 million. It's already well known he pays only 15 percent tax on his income, thanks to the George W. Bush tax giveaway for the super wealthy, or what you might call welfare for millionaires.
As Romney's reluctance bubble inflates, I increasingly wonder if he's actually worth a great deal more than the chattering class estimates. What if he's really worth $600 million? Or 800 million? Or over a billion? That may explain why he's so reluctant to release his tax returns.
Of course, this is pure speculation on my part. But I think it well could be possible. After all, when pundits are estimating he may be worth as much as $400 million and now that's already out in the ether, why continue to wait?
Unless he's even wealthier.
