Hello Musical Moondays. This week, I'm covering the straight edge punk genre. I have never been straight edge when I was in the scene. Ironically I am now, but I still don't consider myself a straight edge person. Like for many, it's a lack of resources and the desire to party all the time fades so you just let it go.
I like a lot of bands that are straight edge, even though I never thought the idea was that cool. Especially because I noticed just as many straight edge kids were getting into spats, sharps and skinheads ruining the scene for everyone, so they might as well be drunk. Not all of them of course, just the ones that go around slapping beers out of peoples' hands and getting too judgmental.
Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat stated as much as to why he quit the scene; someone punched his brother in the face and he punched them back and then he said that's it. Not that violence is exclusive to the straight edge scene as it was everywhere, but it didn't make things any better IMO. He would later on form Fugazi after he left the punk scene.
Minor Threat is one of my favorite punk bands in general despite me never being straight edge. Here we go.
Straight Edge
Out of Step
One great thing about straight edge bands is that they write a lot of great political songs. Here are some of my favorite from Minor Threat.
This one is how I feel about politicians in general right now.
I don't Wanna Hear It
I'm telling you I wanted it to work! I don't like being hurt!
(One of my favorites)
Look Back and Laugh
They also inspired U.K straight edge punk bands like the Vibrators.
Keep It Clean
Baby Baby
Stitch You UP
And there's 7 Seconds.
Young Until I Die
Racism Sucks
There's H20 as well.
Guilty by Assocation
Still Here
Ok, now for a band I have seen multiple times high and drunk feeling guilty(not really) but loving their music. That band is Good Riddance.
When there's no more change to bring about! When there's nothing left to sing about.....America Flies First Class
Mother Superior
Weight of the World
A Credit to his Gender
Call her a whore? She's just the same as you but she could never be that shallow!
They write great love songs too.
Think of Me
Always
Don't turn your pretty face away.......from this diary. :D that sucks that Good Riddance broke up. They were an amazing band I've seen live many times.
There are lots more straight edge bands I forgot or didn't mention. These are some of my favorite, though. You don't have to be straight edge to love some of the music from the scene and some of the bands and I do. I also respect the choice and the lifestyle as long as it's not all one talks about because then it's like a drug. There are a lot of great straight edge punk bands.
And of course these are just my different tastes in music. This is an open thread. Post whatever you want, and even if you hate my guts I will be excellent to you and others. I expect the same out of all of you.
Thank you and good night!!
