After Iowa, all eyes turned to New Hampshire a state where there is very little intrigue other than how much will Mitt Romney win by.
However there is one nugget that the political world has focused on and that is Newt Gingrich in his desperate attempt to stay relevant in the news. Gingrich essentially christened Rick Santorum as his not-Romney and seems poised to be be his battering ram in order to try and take down Mitt Romney.
It is a plot straight out of a well, movie that will never be made, but will it work? Well, as of right now, it seems that at the very least; Gingrich supporters are going the way of Rick.
Poll below.
In today's Gallup poll, Newt Gingrich continues his fall coming in at 19%, the lowest he's been since mid-November, when he was in the process of his surge to the top.
In continuing with his Iowa boost and the friendly media attention that comes with it, Rick Santorum saw his total rise to a high watermark of 11%. While more than likely also aided by the dropout of Michele "not a politician" Bachmann, Santorum continues to look like the last conservative hope to stop Romney.
Romney ties his high watermark of 27% that continues to show his main weakness. Sure, he'll get 98% of the GOP to vote for him come to November but they refuse to fully support him if there are other candidates in the race. There is really nothing else to say about Romney other than we'll see if Gingrich can successfully slow down his path to the nomination.
Rick Perry is still in this race too and he has 6% of the vote. He is effectively the spoiler to Rick Santorum. Santorum has one hope and that is South Carolina. But it's looking like Perry will have enough support to hurt Santorumania.
"Other" scores 6% and with all due respect to the campaigns of Buddy Roemer and Fred Karger, I'm pretty sure it represents voters who are just waiting to see if Santorum can rise before they throw their support around Romney. However, that's just simply an assumption.
One revelation I had is that I now know why the mainstream media "ignores" Ron Paul. At first, I pitied him a tad just because everything he did was written off due to his hardcore fanbase. He's just irrelevant and his non-political supporters will either vote for him or just not show up due to the impending apocalypse. What is there to really mention? He has the highest floor and the lowest possible ceiling of any candidate ever. It's not a media conspiracy, it's simply the fact that he's a lousy politician (his organization is better but I don't find him to be the most outgoing candidate) with far out beliefs.
On the national front it is Obama at 50% and Romney at 48%. I've just glanced over the national polls as the real fight begins at around the convention so I have to wonder, has Obama been at 50 recently? Seems that he's usually around the 45-48 range.
