As Republicans everywhere attempt to disenfranchise voters through discriminatory ID laws, which disproportionately affect the young and minorities, young people are standing up for their civil and political rights. Youth are assembling in Washington DC today to honor that most precious of American liberties- the right to vote.
But Votes for Youth is not just for college students who face losing their right to vote because of Republican efforts to target Democratic leaning voters. There are millions of high school students who work, pay taxes, and care about our country. They are denied the right to vote because their parents made the mistake of giving birth to them too late: these young people may not be 18 yet, but they want to make their voices heard on issues that affect them deeply, from the environment to education to jobs. They deserve the right to vote!
Votes for Youth is is a coordinated effort led by the National Youth Rights Association (NYRA), America's largest youth-led civil rights association, which will include rallies, a petition drive, and efforts to spread the word through social media (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube). Votes for Youth focuses on empower youth through a lower voting age and ending voter ID laws.
