I teach in the hinterlands (a small Midwestern town of less than 2,000) where it's hard, if not impossible to be a gay teen. As the high school drama teacher, I see LGBTQ kids struggle every day with other people's skewed and often negative perceptions of their identity. And although I do what I can, it's not enough.
This is why I am quite excited about a project , a web series, that one of my former college roomies is creating.
It's called The Hinterlands and tells the story of a gay teen growing up in a small, rural community in the Midwest. And, it's a musical! I can't wait to share this with my students.
