Jason Thompson's bad joke.
This weekend, the Tommy Thompson for Senate campaign hit yet another speed bump when Thompson's adult son
went birther at an RNC lunch fundraiser for his dad, saying Republicans had an opportunity to "send President Obama back to Chicago—or Kenya."
Now Thompson the younger has, reportedly, publicly apologized. But there's something missing from this statement, issued by Milwaukee-based firm Michael Best & Friedrich, the law firm where Thompson works.
“Over the weekend, one of our attorneys and the son of Senatorial candidate Tommy Thompson made a regrettable comment at a campaign event for his father. We want to make it clear that the comment made at the campaign event in no way reflects the views, beliefs or values of Michael Best & Friedrich.
Jason has apologized for the comment through the campaign (and to his colleagues at the law firm) and the matter is being dealt with between father and son.”
Notice what's not there? Jason Thompson's public apology. His "apology" for the comment through the campaign was
this:
“The Governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do,” the campaign said in a statement. “Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes.”
So Jason Thompson has been told off by his father and his boss and said to them that he's really sorry that he's embarrassed them. But that's not Jason Thompson issuing a public apology to President Obama or to anyone else for being an ignorant racist in public.
The other thing we haven't heard in any of the stories about this supposed apology is a clear statement, directly from Tommy Thompson, denouncing the joke, and denouncing birtherism.
