Mitt Romney loves women. You know he loves women because he and his wife and his campaign keep telling us the he loves women. Heck, sometimes he'll even listen to them!
So when Romney was asked, during Tuesday's debate, whether he supports equal pay, he answered the question by instead insisting that women in the workplace care about having more time to cook dinner for their families and that, under a Romney administration, there will be so many jobs, employers will even be willing to hire women for some of them.
And then there was this interesting moment:
CROWLEY: Governor Romney, pay equity for women?
ROMNEY: Thank you. And important topic, and one which I learned a great deal about, particularly as I was serving as governor of my state, because I had the chance to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seemed to be men.
And I — and I went to my staff, and I said, "How come all the people for these jobs are — are all men." They said, "Well, these are the people that have the qualifications." And I said, "Well, gosh, can't we — can't we find some — some women that are also qualified?"
ROMNEY: And — and so we — we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet.
I went to a number of women's groups and said, "Can you help us find folks," and they brought us whole binders full of women.
For the first time in his life, Romney wondered where the women were and requested binders full of 'em so he could hire a few. Of course, because this is a Romney story, it isn't even true.
But here's another important detail from the Boston Globe:
Romney, however, did not have a history of appointing women to high-level positions in the private sector. Romney did not have any women partners as CEO of Bain Capital during the 1980s and 1990s.
It never occurred to Romney, while he was the head of Bain Capital, to ask, "Well, gosh, can't we — can't we find some — some women that are also qualified?" Because Romney didn't care, any more than he cared, as governor, about finding qualified women, which is why he flipped through those binders and stuck some women in the positions he didn't care about and called it equality. Just like he doesn't care whether those women are paid equally.
Romney may "love" women, but he sure doesn't give a damn about them.
