My wife and I picked up my 73 year old father to vote early today in Greensboro, NC. My father is a coal miner's son from Wise County, VA. He was a union (UFCW) meatcutter for most of his working life and has always been a straight ticket, YellowDog Democrat. That was 3 early votes for the O-Team and 3 early votes for a straight Democratic ticket.
A word about our voting station. We voted at the Lewis Recreation Center in Greensboro. It is located in a middle class neighborhood. mixed in terms of blue collar and white collar voters. Predominately white, but a racial makeup similar to the state as a whole. The polls opened at 10 AM and we arrived 10 minutes early. There were already 25 people ahead of us and a steady stream behind us. It took us maybe 10 minutes to complete the entire process. It was hard to tell how these folks were voting from who was standing in line, but I would guess it was probably 50/50 on the D/R breakdown.
BTW, I have a friend who works at a polling station for the Board of Elections in Greensboro. His report to me was that at his station, a blue collar, mixed race neighborhood, African-American and Hispanic turnout was HIGH!!! Let's hope it stays that way.
