Maryland Kos was founded by Timmyc in February, 2011. I live in northern Virginia, but since I came from Maryland and spend a lot of time there, I joined the the group and have organized Daily Kos meetups with members from Maryland, DC, and Virginia.
Dadadata is one of the moderators and he lives in the Eastern Shore, so he's focused on issues on the other side of the bridge. Aximill lives in Baltimore and has done a great job republishing diaries that discuss Maryland issues. Sreeizzle2012, another moderator, lives just north of Baltimore, and he's worked to get Baltimore Kossacks together, and arranged one meetup last month.
I asked Timmyc if I could be one of the moderators because I thought I could help build up membership, and we've built it to over 60 members. When I see a diary or post from someone who mentions that they're from Maryland, I invite them to become a contributor to Maryland Kos.
If you want to join Maryland Kos, you can send a kosmail to any of the moderators, but you'll probably get on quicker if you send the request to me because I'm online several times a day.
If you want to post a diary to Maryland Kos, the way you do it is to write and post the diary, then have it republished to Maryland Kos. You can send a kosmail to any of the moderators to have it republished. I have been giving editorial status to all of the members so you actually can republish it yourself. After you post the diary, go to the bottom of the diary where it says, RECOMMEND HOTLIST and REPUBLISH. Click on REPUBLISH and it will give you the option to select which of your groups you want to republish the diary to.
We can also send messages to the group and I often send messages to everyone that way. There are sometimes discussions amongst the group. Currently, no more low hanging fruit has a discussion going on the Gambling Initiative on the Maryland ballot. The problem with group messages is, you won't see the messages unless you actually go to the group page.
I've been encouraging members of the group to get together. Even though I have many friends who are Democrats, very few of them have the passion for change that I find in Daily Kos, so I am eager to meet other kossacks. In August, I hosted a get together in Silver Spring, Maryland, which gathered together members of Virginia Kos, Maryland Kos, and a few from D.C. In September, sreeizzle2012 organized a meetup of Baltimore kossacks. Earlier this month, a large group of Maryland, Virginia, and DC kossacks met at Union Station in DC. I've had the good fortune to get together socially with Mollyd, webgenie, and sreeizzle2012 outside of the meetups.
If you live in Maryland, or you're interested in Maryland -- maybe an expatriat like me -- you should join Maryland Kos.
