A new poll conducted by Good News McCain Research™ on behalf of HorseRace Media has the national race tied, showing Mitt Romney trailing President Obama by only 20 points, within the poll's 30-point margin of error.
"This race is now a statistical dead heat, with Romney surging back from our last poll showing him trailing by 21 points", said GNM Research™ in a tweet.
While Obama holds a statistically insignificant 60-40 edge among registered voters, the poll shows a big edge for Romney among likely voters, winning them 99-0, with 1% undecided.*
*Likely voters were determined with a series of questions, including "Are you white?" and "Romney: dittoes or megadittoes?". Undecideds were those who couldn't figure out how to answer the phone.
Here are the crosstabs:
The poll surveyed about 1000 people, give or take, between awhile ago and roughly this past Wednesday or Thursday, along parts of Route 66 and the boring bits of Interstate 90. The cost was $3.95 per minute. The gender/ethnic breakdown was:
People saying "Hello?": 67%
Wrong numbers: 13%
Other: 1%
Note: due to rounding, numbers may not add up to 100%
Commenting on the poll, Wolf Gergen of Villager News Network said, "This is the closest race I've ever seen, especially at these ad rates. Such a deal, you can't beat these 30-second avails...and on a weekend!".
