FEMA director Craig Fugate, interviewed by Steve Inskeep on Morning Edition about half an hour ago - the transcript and audio is not up on the NPR site yet - gave an impressively informed and controlled update on the work that needs to be done in the wake of Sandy. He also talked about what had already been done. It was good to hear that such a commanding and informed man is heading up these rescue and recovery efforts. I kept thinking back to those pictures coming out of New Orleans.
At the end of the interview, Inskeep, injecting a little politics - or attempting to - asked Mr Fugate what his response was to Michael Brown's heckuv'outrageous comments that President Obama had acted too fast in issuing federal disaster relief orders.
Fugate's response was quick, sharp and said it all: 'Better fast than late'.
Sorry for short diary, will update when transcript and audio become available.
