Like most of you, I have enjoyed watching Governor Christie of New Jersey sing the praises of President Obama, a man he was castigating just two weeks ago. There has been much speculation as to Christie's motivation for this effusive praise.
I am not cynical enough to discount the fact that Christie, with whom I disagree on almost every substantive political point, is actually a man who loves his state and is grateful for the support of the President and the Federal Government in trying to stabilize a disastrous situation.
Christie is probably motivated by political concerns. His praise of Obama has earned him a super fast Emergency Declaration from FEMA and a Presidential visit to his state. That could be very important to a Republican Governor running for reelection in a Blue state.
There is one important message that Governor Christie is sending us, which I have not seen commented on either here or in the MSM. Chris Christie is telling the world that he knows that Mitt Romney will nnot be elected President in a few days!
I'll explain my reasoning after the squiggle.
If Chris Christie thought there was any chance in hell of Mitt winning the election, he would not have stated on Fox and Friends how little he cared about Romney's desire to get some political hay out of visiting the devastated New Jersey Shore. He was angrily dismissive of Steve Doucy's suggestion.
Christie would be hedging his bets a lot more if he thought Romney could win. The damage done by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey will take years to rectify. Any hope of restoring the shore and protecting Northern Jersey from floods will require untold billions in Federal aid. Thousands of New Jersey citizens have lost there homes, and in many cases all their belongings. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Jersey businesses have been shut down and many will not be able to re-open for months.
So if Chris Christie thought there was any chance in hell of a Romney victory, he would be sucking up to the next President of the United States, even while he courted favor with the current occupant of the White House. This is very telling especially if you consider that, as a leading Romney surrogate, Christie would be aware of the internal polling coming out of Boston.
Please don't use this as an excuse to not GOTV. We still need all hands on deck, especially if we want to keep control of the Senate and seize controll of the House.
But, we now know that there is one prominent Republican who has shown by his actions that Romney cannot and will not be elected President next Tuesday.
Lets throw ourselves into the fray for five more days, confident in victory, but wise enough to know that every vote counts and we must do our utmost to deliver every one of our voters to the polls next Tuesday.
