I staggered back home last night after a month on the road with the DoTheMath tour. We'd been playing to sold out houses around the country--but you never know, maybe you're just inside your own small bubble. (Or, in our case, our own small bus)
But within an hour of being home, two things happened
1) I heard from my colleagues at 350.org that we had just passed 146 campuses where the divestment fight is underway--we're closing in on the total number of campuses that eventually divested from South Africa (155), and even though so far it's early days and only 2 (Unity and Hampshire) have sold their stock, this fight is now fully on, and growing by the minute.
2)I turned on my laptop, only to find a story from the NYT with a big picture from our tour splashed across the electronic front page. It's a great piece, focusing on the fight at Swarthmore and then stepping back to show that they're in the vanguard of a suddenly mushrooming movement.
This is a movement that we can win--and if we do, we'll do much to turn the fossil fuel industry into the new tobacco industry, and weaken their political power. We'll give our champs in DC and other capitols some political space to do their thing. So please help out by
1) Emailing the article from the NYT;and
2) Getting involved at your college or your alma mater here
Check out all the action at gofossilfree.org. We've got liftoff, let's go into orbit
