Maggie Gallagher
Interesting comment spotted at David Blankenhorn's Family Scholar website. Chairwoman of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), Maggie Gallagher is spotted opining that the Defense of Marriage Act will not survive scrutiny at the Supreme Court. She not only predicts Kennedy will strike it but speculates Justice Robert's vote is possible as well.
The site's proprietor David Blankenhorn was the star, and only witness who testified in support of Proposition 8 in the Federal trial on its constitutionality. He has been close to Gallagher or they were. Blankenhorn also famously switched sides and came to the conclusion he does support marriage equality for the better stability it builds for LGBT families. He announced this in an op-ed in the New York Times in June.
It's a remarkably candid comment from one of DOMA's biggest defenders. I did not even believe it was authentically her, at first. But, Gallagher does have a history of commenting via that handle on that particular site and she has not in several days disavowed it, despite requests for authentication.
Now, what's most remarkable is NOM is still fundraising off the promise of defending DOMA, via their Defend DOMA campaign. Even if she thought DOMA was doomed, I wouldn't have thought she'd say so in public for fear of loss of fundraising potential.
It's interesting that as they lumber toward the final showdown Gallagher doesn't even feel the need to put on a good game face, or is not insulated from reality by the bubble of the Conservative Entertainment Complex.
