As an old woman of very limited means I care as much as the next soul about Social Security.
That said, I think letting the sociopaths in Congress do this to people in the armed services will be as devastating as those frightening cuts to Social Security.
Veterans are making a noise about it -

I saw the men of my father's WWII generation build lives and raise families by turning to military careers. There was an entire vast demographic back then, and more so now, who won't have the chance to go to college. Plenty of bright, competent, decent young people who don't have family money, or didn't go to great schools growing up, have been able to join the services and get the training, stability and benefits anyone needs to have the foundation for a middle-class life.
Cutting off the services as a way for people without inherited advantages to build lives for themselves stable enough to raise families is a catastrophe. So, here's a diary as my small way to spread the word.
