This is my first diary so be gentle. There is so much hostility and anger in today's world, that I wanted to take a break from it all, and pay tribute to a kind and decent man who sacrificed his lif, forty years ago today.
On January 31st, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Outfielder Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. While a plane crash is tragic anyway you look at it, what makes this event even moreso, is that Roberto Clemente died in the crash on a humanitarian mission.
Nicaragua had been hit by a devestating earthquake. While relief supplies were pouring in, the Somoza regime was diverting them to be sold. Roberto Clemente figured that if he accompanied the supplies, that due to his stature, no one would dare steal them.
Who says there are not any heroes left.
Godspeed Roberto
