Last night, Stephen Colbert briefly looked at Jim DeMint's resignation from the Senate, and mentioned the subject of him possibly being appointed to replace him.
But of course, tonight's big story comes from my home state of South Carolina.
CHRIS CILLIZZA (12/6/2012): Big, breaking news in this town. Senator Jim DeMint, a Tea Party favorite and conservative icon, is surprisingly resigning his seat at the end of the year.
That's right! South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint is de-quittin'. Now, the decision on who will replace DeMint falls to South Carolina Governor — and friend of the show — Nikki Haley. But who will she pick? Let's see, you want somebody young, somebody conservative, somebody from South Carolina, maybe somebody who had a super PAC....
Wait a second! (audience cheering and applause) Watch where you point that thing, it's powerful! OK.
Now folks, I'm not going to sit here and say I should be South Carolina's next Senator. Not when so many other people are saying it for me.
USA Today: Is Stephen Colbert running for the U.S. Senate?
Huffington Post: Stephen Colbert for Senate?
Roll Call: South Carolina for Stephen Colbert?
New York Post: Are we ready for Sen. Colbert?
(wild audience cheering and applause)
Are we ready? Well, I get it, I get it. I know when I look at the U.S. Senate, I say to myself, you know what they could use? Another white guy.
So I want you to take to the Twitters, OK? Take to the Twitters, I want you to tweet @NikkiHaley why she should appoint me to the U.S. Senate with the hashtag #SenatorColbert. (wild audience cheering and applause)
Oh. I gotta say, that feels right. Now of course, we all know Jim DeMint leaves some big shoes to fill. Then again....
Video below the fold.
Stephen concluded
Hobbit Week by interviewing director
Peter Jackson. He also
revealed that he now
has a statue of himself at Madame Tussauds.
Meanwhile, Jon looked at
Kate Middleton's pregnancy with
Sam Bee.
Jon then talked with New Jersey Governor
Chris Christie, who got
two segments. It still went long, though, so here's the whole unedited interview in three parts.
