I found this on the BBC Mundo website last week and thought that it was truly astounding and worth sharing.
Ayumu is a chimp at the Kyoto University primate research centre. At 11 years old he can perform numerical/memory feats that are quite amazing.
What feats?
First he learned to count up numbers from 1 to 19 on a screen. Easy stuff for us. But then ...
Ayumu can now see 9 numbers displayed on a screen for 1/2 of a second, have them covered up, and then count them up in order.
So here is the Saturday morning diversion.
First take a look at this 3 minute video on Ayumu.
Now go to this website where you can try the same test, though with only 5 numbers on the screen at a time, and see how many you can get right.

As you try the game realize that Ayumu can get the whole screen right 8 times out of 10 on average. Of course he has lots of practice, but it is still quite an interesting feat ... especially as we (I'm assuming most of us) struggle to get the same results.
