Some poems based on news articles this week:
-Religion- always attracts my eye.
-GOPer debate number 2million! or so.
-Steve King of Iowa, Mars
Join us every Monday evening for drinks at the Daily Kos community political poetry club. Drop by and speak your mind in rhyme or blank verse. Poetry is always welcome in the comments. Let’s use language to scream our passion to the world. Bongos, berets and turtle neck sweaters are optional. The keypad is mightier than the sword.
UNEXPLAINED
(March 2005 thru February 2012)
Nothing compares to our desire
To have it all explained
We turn to gods and demons
Witch doctors and priests
Some claim to speak with the dead
But we never get to hear them
Others see the future, one which
Makes them fat and happy
Challenge such claims
And be charged with heresy
A person of no faith
And therefore pessimistic
Some would have us believe
This world is here for us alone
The universe is our playground
Given by the gods as inheritance
Belief in magic, religion and
The wisdom of our fathers
Have been major barriers to
Human progress for centuries
The christian religion alone
Has slowed the advance of
Writing, science, individual rights
Medicine and free speech
There are those to take
Advantage of the gullible
With the promise of eternal life
By the purchase of salvation
But hope is yet alive
A generation of thinkers
Across the globe
Begins to understand our place
We are but the latest step
In the evolutionary chain
The end of yesterday
The dawn of tomorrow
For me, I am content
To experience the glory of
Whatever comes my way
Each day, never to ask why
We’re here because we are

A Contradiction in Logic
The insecure megalomaniac in his personal search
For meaning in his own anxiety driven life
Becomes a con man in the game of salvation
Preaches bible verses to the lazy congregation.
Who would rather sit back comfortable to drop
Their tithe silver in a plate - tokens for feeding
Starving wasted children in far off lands
Without soiling their manicured perfect fingernails.
Meanwhile,
the bombs continue
to rain down
to rain dow... to rain do....
to rain d.....
to rain......
In the name
of god
and peace.

You Must Be Joking
The first believes in family values
For everyone else but himself
The next believes in liberty
Only if you agree with him
A third claims to be christian
His beliefs make christ shudder
The fourth has no beliefs at all
Only mittens full of slogans
Honest Abe must be wondering
As he surveys the nascent century
“Can my principles survive placed
In the hands of charlatans like these?”
The sage said once: “Walk with men
Who limp, you will learn to limp.”
Let us hope, for the sake of sanity,
Truth and the nation's future,
This barbershop quartet of discord
And error sinks into the stagnant pool
Of forgotten history as their lip-synched
Unsingable melody dies on the vine

Steve King: Iowa, Mars
When did the conservative spirit forget about the accelerator?
The foot jammed hard on the brake pedal is a good safety device
Only if the vehicle is capable of forward motion
Especially true with an automatic transmission which forces
The engine into idle until the driver puts a foot on the gas pedal.
Here, for instance, we see the Grand Old Party stuck in neutral
Sitting upright in a 1962, 2 ton, Detroit-made family sedan
(V8, 10mpg, no seat belts, rides like a loofah on wheels)
At the wheel: Steve King from Iowa (Mars), that's smiling Steve, shaking
His fist and yelling: “Freedom to waste! Freedom to destroy! Freedom to hate!
Freedom to deface! Freedom to...”
