Being a Texan, I'm used to a certain amount of idiocy from the leaders of this state. It's Republican controlled from the Governor's mansion down to the school board, and as such, I should be used to "taking a stand for principles" that often have disastrous consequences. This time, however, even I'm shocked.
As this Dallas Morning News article (paywalled) points out, Texas is about to reject $35 million in federal funding to help poor women get health checkups, simply because some of that money would go to Planned Parenthood.
If you can't read the article, here's the gist:
Health and Human Services Comissioner Tom Suehs signed a rule on Thursday that bans Planned Parenthood (and other abortion providers) from being part of the Texas Women's Health Services program. Previously, Planned Parenthood was the major provider of these services, accounting for 44 percent of the funding.
Because they signed that rule, the federal government will no longer provide $9 for every $1 the state spends on women's health care because this violates the Social Security Act.
As a result, Texas Republicans will effectively kill the Texas Women's Health Program.
And nearly 100,000 Texas women will lose some health care as a result.
Way to go, Texas.
