Next week marks the first anniversary of the day Gov. Scott Walker "dropped the bomb" on Wisconsin -- it was February 11 when he sprung his secretive, explosive, mendaciously-named "budget repair bill" and expected the state to roll over as he tried to cram it into law within a week, before anybody could figure out the full extent of the outrages it contained.
Later that month, with massive spontaneous protests still ongoing, the following song went up on YouTube. Madison singer/songwriter Peter Leidy had created an inspired, deceptively gentle-sounding protest masterpiece, a pitch-perfect take-off on Mac Davis' 1971 hit Watching Scotty Grow.
Almost one year later, Leidy's song fits my mood. A million recall signatures are in. Walker has lawyered up for an upcoming meeting with John Doe prosecutors, hiring the best criminal defense and real-estate attorneys the Kochs' money can buy.
As the FOX-washed faithful spin their wheels trying to find non-existent fraud in the petition PDFs, let's sit back for a moment, pass the popcorn, and dream together: we may all be Watching Scotty Go!
Lyrics below the cheese curd (h/t Cady Brownell, of course that's what the squiggle is!!)
Bustin' unions, that's the Walker plan,
Scott's the man,
That's our boy!
Collective bargaining right out the door,
And he still wants more,
That's our boy!
He'll take a phone call from a billionaire,
But won't listen to the families down below
If he just won't hear, he may be packing up next year,
And we'll be biding our time and watching Scotty go!
Wants to chat with us beside the fire,
But he's a liar,
That's our boy!
Said this plan should come as no surprise,
But he's telling lies,
That's our boy!
Well Governor, the people are still speaking,
And you're gonna have to reap just what you sow,
In a year or so, well I just don't know,
But we really should be watching Scotty go!
Funded by the rightwing Brothers Koch,
That's no joke,
He's their boy!
Said the unions should be defunct
When he got punk'd,
That's our boy!
Well Governor, you woke a sleeping giant,
We're coming out in droves, don'tcha know,
In the Capitol wall to wall, people chanting RECALL,
We may all be watching Scotty go!
