Out of the mouth of babes...as the saying goes. My sweet little six year old has always been more aware of adult things than one would expect of her at her age. She also pops out with some insights every now and again that put to rest all the dire predictions about her intellect that the neonatalogist told me when she was born 9 weeks early at 2lbs 10oz.
Over the last year she has seen me watching clips of the president speaking on various topics. A while back I expressed frustration that he was caving to the Republicans and had lost the will to fight for the middle class. She asked me, "is Barack Obama making good choices, Mama?" (talking about making good choices features largely in any family raising children)
At the time I said that I did not AGREE with some of the choices he was making and why. She nodded sagely. When I would agree that he was making wise choices she would smile broadly and talk about the time we went to see him speak locally and how her sister painted a picture of him and mailed it to him and got a letter back.
I guess this is a little bit bragging on my bright politically aware first grader and a little bit, its never to early to help kids make the connection between what leaders do and how that affects us.
