So I read the article and the question was why do so many people seem impervious to the obvious malevolent malfunctioning of our nation at this time and point and moment. The fear being that until enough people are aware of the situation nothing will change and we will all be dragged down with the sinking plastic, fantastic, inevitable Wonderbread culture.
Yes, telling people what they don’t want to hear is a tough sell I’ve noticed this myself sometimes. And it is hard to blame people for not wanting to admit to themselves that things are as bad as some may be saying they are; an overdose of bad news can be overwhelming and it is often more prudent to take it in small portions.
There is an inclination to protect oneself from reality when that reality is blatantly negative by ignoring it; it is a natural response and there is some good sense to it. Being driven to despair by an onslaught of bad news is not going to do anyone any good and we each have our limits as to how much we can process at a given time. Too much and we lose our equilibrium and sink into depression or worse as illustrated in the news with people going on killing rampages here and abroad.
Some of us truly can’t handle the truth without going bonkers and this should be understandable and we should feel sympathy for their situation because we are all subject to it in our own way. Grasping at the straws offered by our culture many people are holding on to a reality based on lies and self-interest believing what they are told without closely examining it.
Instead of thinking for ourselves our modern culture has made it particularly easy to meld with the majority opinion that is offered on one hundred silver platters day and night. We may have to choose sides but after that the information flows in incomprehensible measure surely diluting our essence as it goes. We know too much about too little and too little about too much for our own good.
Sensory overload and information glut and plugged in instantaneous communication has begun to dominate our lives so there is little time for quiet refection on what’s really going on here. It has become a blur as the pace has been ratcheted up slowly by our contraptions an innovation at a time and now we are consumed by our consumption and unable to think straight.
And while we are in this stupor drunk with distractions we hardly notice what’s going on and the people pulling the strings behind our backs are free to do what they will knowing we don’t have the time or inclination to question their plans. It’s easier to believe what they tell us and go with the flow and they know it and use every chance they get to promote a sanitized version of their brutality against the people and make it appealing as if this were the right thing to do.
Is it any wonder that most people are not interested in lifting the beautiful, noble curtain our nation likes to hide behind; look at the sunny days go dark and mean spirited and see the greed and violence that we have been inexorably drawn into. They say that ignorance is bliss and when we have a choice to ignore or face unpleasantness there is a strong urge towards ignorance as the better path.
We eat what they feed us and everything is sugar coated and made palatable for those who go along to get along, we are the good guys after all we live in the greatest nation on earth an exceptionally scrumptious blend of beauty, talent and wisdom that will never have a rival. When we keep people in squalid poverty encrusted inner cities it is because we are good and we are mighty, when we attack other countries and kill hundreds of thousands we are doing them a favor by bringing a better way of life our way of life.
Our banks need to charge poor people more for services and do all they can to get them hooked on exorbitant loan payments that they will never pay off; they will just pay and pay and they like it that way I’m sure. This is a great country all right great in everyway. If you’re doing business and can afford to rig the game everyone is there with a hand out and a wink; nothing is off the table for those who can pay.
The violent and the dishonest have taken control of FunPark USA and they are running it into the ground; no way to treat a park but there you have it. The unscrupulous have risen to the top and taken the controls with them; they’re driving the bus of state now and we are lowly pedestrians who had better see things their way if we want to ride home tonight what do you think?
