[UPDATED NOTE:]This is not about DKOS readership. There are obviously people of all races expressing their outrage over here. This is about the mainstream politicians of the Democratic Party. The reason for this diary is I noticed some comments on the internet even in non right wing sites about how "Oh Boy, here comes Sharpton again". And it is obvious the moderate mainstream of america was not immediately outraged enough that it took this long for the case to get traction in the public. Everytime, I see TV footage, the percentage of black protestors is striking when this should be an issue which should trouble all Americans to the same extent. People can say that leaders are waiting for facts. What more facts? The case is bad as it is even if you buy Zimmerman's account that Trayvon was beating him up. The fact that Bill Lee has said that a THOROUGH investigation was done and there is no evidence to charge Zimmerman is reason enough to condemn him. Yes, we have a lot of good white people and Indian people(my ethnicity). But the urgency of the outrage was lacking to some degree outside the African American community, and that includes even mine.I personally do not care about race baiting. I even dismissed the lack of diversity accusations hurled at the occupy movement. But the visuals of Sanford protests I see on TV are just too striking to dismiss. [END of UPDATED NOTE]
Seriously, when Sandra Fluke was talked about in such distasteful manner by the likes of that fat pig Rush, I saw a lot of white Democratic leaders blow their load in expressing outrage on that issue. Why is Sharpton one of the very few to stand up and expressing outrage over this? Why aren't prominent white Democratic leaders out there expressing outrage over the cop handling? The real case is not just bringing Zimmerman to justice. The real federal case is over the racist cops who left the scene without a thorough investigation only because the victim was a black teen. Giving a statement about the teen's death is easy enough. But someone needs to condemn the statements coming from authority figures in FL justifying the investigation done. All the federal prosecutors are going to do is go after that paranoid idiot Zimmerman. Who is going to go after the cops whose attitude will encourage more of such tragedies?
When people groan over the likes of Sharpton showing up for one of his rallies, what they miss is that Sharpton wouldn't be hogging the attention if prominent white Democrats stood up and spoke loudly against such outrage. They seemed to muster a lot more outrage over mere words spoken by Rush about Sandra Fluke. Yet they can't summon equal outrage over a KILLING of a black teen and the coverup of the murder by the cops? What the cops did was much worse than what Rush did. The damage to psyche of Martin's family by the cops indifference is much worse than what Rush did to Fluke.
If the white Democratic leaders are too chicken to use the racial angle, how about a basic civil liberties angle. No teen of any race should be shot over this. Give speeches asking parents how they would feel if their kid was shot because some fat guy couldn't risk taking a beating in a fight he started.
This is not about you. This is about the mainstream in communities like Sanford, or Houston, TX where Tolan was shot in his own driveway. . What Bill Lee has said about the incident is much more damaging that what Rush said about Fluke. Why weren't more politicians pressuring Bill Lee to get fired instead of accepting the temporary resignation.
Words matter more when uttered by a person of authority, such as Bill Lee, compared to what a shock jock such as Rush. The same applies for someone like a Democratic party politician versus a Maher. This is why Bill Lee's and other cops comments about this case should have been countered with more urgency than what some stupid fat shock jock says about a person who is not physically harmed. Hell, even that idiot Imus didn't really bother me too much with his ignorant comments about the African American female players. But everyone needs to let Bill Lee know he can't get away with those comments implicitly justifying Zimmerman's actions.
