Years ago, I drove my daughter from New England to South Carolina to look at colleges. She was an athlete and was considering her options. We visited UNC Chapel Hill and I fell in love with the charming setting, older buildings, and gardens. My daughter loved the school, but the academic program she was looking for wasn't a match with the programs the school offered. She settled on a smaller private school further south.
If we had been making that search now, I'd be doing a little extra background work. Does this school have any association with Rush Limbaugh? Sound extreme? Not really. Consider that many colleges allow local radios who are identified as Rush affiliates, and use his show as an anchor, to call themselves the official radio station of or the official voice of ... their college teams. So you will bet that faculty and students will have that spot marked on their dials, along with many in the surrounding area. Should their women students be subject to Limbaugh's misogynistic rants as part of their college experience?
This is now becoming an issue for many schools, and will become an issue for many more as data bases are built that draw the line from a college to Limbaugh.
In the midst of college basketball season the UNC Chancellor has been fielding calls about the school's beloved Tarheels relationship w "Rush Radio." He made an executive decision:
"UNC officials have reached a compromise with WRDU, 106.1 FM—also known as “Rush Radio”—after local residents petitioned the school to break ties with the station over its association with Rush Limbaugh.
As part of the arrangement, UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp says WRDU has agreed not to advertise Limbaugh while broadcasting Tar Heel sports, or to advertise Tar Heel sports while broadcasting Limbaugh." full story here-
Is that really it? Is that how they plan to disassociate themselves from Limbaugh? Not quite. That is not enough. Dials are still set to Rush Radio. There are other options. Please help us put pressure on the chancellor by not only contacting him, but by contacting the alumni department and trustees. The whole story has seems to have the sense that this man is hoping this will all blow over.
Furthermore, if you are willing to take the time, use this page to identify the coaches and directors of the women's sports teams at UNC Chapel Hill . Contact them, and tell them their athletes deserve better. Women college athletes who use birth control are not "Sluts."
Tell these people that the women who attend their school, who graduated from their school and who are considering their school should not be subject to any connection to Rush Limbaugh.
