Sometime yesterday afternoon, CBN quietly deleted an absolutely disgusting "teaching paper" saying that if you're a victim of sexual abuse, you can somehow "consent" to incest and "allow yourself to be molested." And it wasn't just because of squawking from those godless libruls, either--according to SwedishJewfish, at least two CBN call-center volunteers were shocked this paper was out there and thought it should be taken down.
Good enough? Nope, not by a longshot. There is uncontestable evidence that CBN has been teaching this since at least 1996, when it first went on the Web--and well after people became more aware of the traumatic effects of sexual abuse. Either CBN was too lazy to take it down, or Pat Robertson actually believes that it's possible to "consent" to child abuse. Whatever the case, it is flat-out inexcusable for it to have been out there that long.
Keep burning up CBN's switchboard at 757-226-7000 and demand that CBN issue a full apology. Remember, it costs Robertson $1 per call ... and if we keep it up, that could cost Marion Gordon a lot of money.
It makes me sick to my stomach to think that CBN had this paper out there for 16 years, if not longer. Who knows how many victims came to CBN looking for guidance on their ordeal and found this? There may also have been legal considerations at play as well. The paper advised anyone who suspects abuse to talk to a minister before doing anything. Just about every state requires all or most people who suspect child abuse to report it to the police. If anyone seriously believes that the First Amendment would protect someone who didn't report it on the advice of a minister, there's a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.
I'm hoping to get ahold of People for the American Way tomorrow to put the spotlight on this outrage. This is several times more outrageous than any right-wing lunacy that CBN has put out over the years, and we need to make sure Robertson owns up.
