in 2009 one Priscilla Coleman and her colleagues published a study in a well-respected psychiatry journal proporting to show that having an abortion caused mental health problems for women. When another researcher was unable to replicate those results, questions were raised about the Coleman methodology. Further investigation demonstrated that rates of alcoholism, drug use and other issues seemed to be increased in the Coleman study because, despite their assurances to the contrary, they were using the LIFETIME incidence of mental health issues for women who had received abortions. So according to Coleman et. al, if a woman had a mental health crisis in 1988, and then had an abortion in 1995, the mental health issue was the fault of the abortion!

Phony studies like these are propagated by the right as part of their jihad against reproductive rights. Republican legislatures pass laws requiring women be 'counseled' with lies like these (e.g., that abortion can cause breast cancer) to keep them from accessing a procedure that is actually safer for them than going through with the pregnancy. Kudos to Steinberg et al for exposing Coleman's lies!
