Earlier today, Rick Santorum tried to burnish his credentials as the social conservative in the race with an appearance on American Family Radio's Focal Point, hosted by American Family Association policy chief Bryan Fischer.
Watch the whole thing here:
It says a lot about Santorum that he's willing to appear on air with a guy who has gone on record as an AIDS denier, thinks it's perfectly okay to insult women as long as you "use the dictionary accurately," and is an unabashed Islamophobe.
The interview amounted to a 13-minute infomercial for the Santorum campaign. It was full to the brim with dog whistles--for instance, claims that the establishment's running scared about Santorum winning the nomination because they're "based in New York" and don't like his unabashed stand for "Judeo-Christian values." He also threw a haymaker at Obama, claiming he was "more of an emperor than a president." Never mind that Santorum was one of the biggest proponents of the nuclear option while in the Senate.
People for the American Way's Kyle Mantyla wasn't surprised to hear Fischer fawning over Santorum. Mantyla was listening to Focal Point a few weeks ago, and noticed Fischer saying that Santorum sounds exactly like the other hosts on American Family Radio. It may help Little Ricky on the primary trail, but if he gets the nomination it'll almost guarantee he gets Goldwatered.
