I love The View with one exception. That exception is Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Today in his usual calm manner, the President killed her talking points by telling her she was wrong on all counts.
Hasselbeck asked how his approach to same sex marriage differed from Romney since they both wanted to leave the decision to individual states. She questioned how they would he would push the issue forward any more than Romney: Her question:
"move things forward any more than Mitt Romney in terms of leaving it to the states. Because at this point, you both said leave it to the states to decide."
The President responded:
"Elisabeth, that's actually not true. I think Mitt Romney said he wants a constitutional amendment - that is not a state issue. That federalizes the whole issue and that is a major difference.
He (Romney) would defend DOMA, that's a federal issue that says even the State of New York that has made a determination that we recognize same sex couples, same sex marriage, that will not be recognized at the federal level so there are real differences.
He made his point in Obama fashion, pointing out to her that Romney wants a Federal Constitutional Amendment defining marriage. This would void any current same sex marriage and forbid any state, including those who currently allow same sex marriage, from issuing any further marriage licences to gay and lesbian couples.. So there are real differences in their positions.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE ASSISTED THOUGH THE 'COMMENTS' TO MAKE THIS DIARY COMPLETE AND ACCURATE.
