Welcome! "What's Happenin'?" is a casual community diary (a daily series, 8:30 AM Eastern on weekdays, 10 AM on weekends and holidays) where we hang out and talk about the goings on here and everywhere.
We welcome links to your writings here on dkos or elsewhere, posts of pictures, music, news, etc.
Just about anything goes, but attacks and pie fights are not welcome here. This is a community diary and a friendly, peaceful, supportive place for people to interact.
Everyone who wants to join in peaceful interaction is very welcome here.

Good Morning!
"The creative act is a letting down of the net of human imagination into the ocean of chaos on which we are suspended, and the attempt to bring out of it ideas.
It is the night sea journey, the lone fisherman on a tropical sea with his nets, and you let these nets down - sometimes, something tears through them that leaves them in shreds and you just row for shore, and put your head under your bed and pray.
At other times what slips through are the minutiae, the minnows of this ichthyological metaphor of idea chasing.
But, sometimes, you can actually bring home something that is food, food for the human community that we can sustain ourselves on and go forward.”

Nurses Gather At NATO Summit To Demand Governments Fund Health
Martese Chism, a RN for 20 years at Cook County hospital, said she was at the rally because "We bailed out Wall Street. Now we believe it's time for Wall Street to start helping America."
"Instead of allocating revenue for war, they need to take some of that money from the defense spending and allocate it for health care and Main Street. We have three wars. That money needs to come back to America. We need to get out of those wars."

"Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of access to information are vital whether you’re a credentialed journalist, a protester, or just a bystander with a camera," the organizations asserted.
Maybe the fact that many refer to NPR as Now Praise Republicans has something to do with few new listeners.
NPR Sees Growth In Listeners Stall
Another problem area: The strong audience growth that NPR’s news and entertainment programs experienced over the past decade appears to have flattened....
The gains workers made by giving their lives are now being rolled back by the 1%.
92 Years Ago: The Matewan Massacre
The Matewan Massacre is one small piece of the larger story of Appalachian resistance to the coal companies in the early 1920s. In 1921, the companies had Sid Hatfield murdered for his actions at Matewan on the steps of the McDowell County Courthouse in Welch. This murder sparked the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest workplace insurrection in American history, which I wrote about before I began this series.
10,000 miners walked off their jobs and went to war against the coal companies.
Over five days, 30 thugs and 100 miners died in pitched battles before President Warren Harding called in the Army to crush the strike. The UMWA attempt to organize West Virginia failed, but Lewis would eventually lead his union to victory, at least reducing if not ever ending coal corporation control over miners’ lives.
At some point the reality of the gruesome nature of Drone strikes will be brought out of the shadows.
Obama Administration Censors News On Drone Attacks
There’s a problem with that, though: The Administration’s repeated reluctance (and at times outright refusal) to let Pakistani drone critics into this country.
The latest example is Pakistani student filmmaker Muhammad Danish Qasim, who was denied a visa so he can accept an award for his film on how terrorists are capitalizing on drone strikes at a film festival in Seattle.

Chicago Police Attempt To Frame Protestors
As noted previously, the three activists remaining — Bryan Church, Jarred Chase, Brent Betterly — appear in the video posted of police threatening violence during the NATO summit. It now seems clear that police are charging them in retaliation for posting the video.
Gelsomino stated to the press that the charges were very upsetting. She called them “nebulous” and “trumped up” charges. She added that the NLG has not spoken to anyone involved in the investigation. An officer told them that each of these three men have been charged tonight.
“Charging these people who are here to peacefully protest against NATO for terrorism when in reality the police have been terrorizing activists in Chicago is completely outrageous,” she declared.
Chicago Police Dept Goes After Citizen Journalists
Late last night a car carrying Tim Pool and Luke Rudkowski, livestream video journalists, is pulled over by CPD. This is the police state in action:
Not "news"--but ya gotta love Miles Davis:
Davis was a man of few words. When he did speak, his words often had a similar effect to a hand grenade being lobbed into the room.
In 1987, he was invited to a White House dinner by Ronald Reagan. Few of the guests appeared to know who he was.
During dinner, Nancy Reagan turned to him and asked what he'd done with his life to merit an invitation.
Straight-faced, Davis replied: "Well, I've changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?"
