The Date Is Set
The Second Annual Baja Arizona Kossacks Picnic will take place on Saturday, May 19, starting around 6. The venue will be Rancho Tres Palmas, located near 22nd and Columbus in Tucson. (I'll send directions by individual Kosmail if needed.) We'll have Sonoran Dogs on hand,
but we definitely want to preserve the pot-luck character of the thing, so feel free to bring something and, of course, Bring Your Own Beverage. I need some idea of how many will want hot dogs, so please check-in and RSVP in the comments. Heck, check in even if you're not coming. There are now more than 40 members of BAK in the Tucson area alone and maybe another 20 scattered elsewhere in Arizona. How many still read the site, how many still live here ? Let us know.

Way To Go, Cap'n Melvin
Baja's own State Senator Al "Cap'n" Melvin, (R-Looneybrooke), was conspicuous for his idiocy during the recently concluded legislative session, proving that he could go head-to-head with nuttiest fruitcakes Maricopa County has to offer. As noted here last week, he managed to convince the rest of the nutballs up there to support his plea for a nuclear waste dump in Arizona. This week he was back in the news with more. He was the proud sponsor of SB 1332 which demands that the Federal Government hand over all Federal lands in Arizona to the State Government, prompting the editors at the Star to ask, "Why not just secede ?", and SB 1348 calling for the establishment of a State Poet Laureate. Why a Poet Laureate ? To "help in the promotion of English", of course, "written and spoken English." It's not that the good Captain likes poetry. This is not about art, it's about English, dammit, ENGLISH! THOSE DAMN MEXICANS AREN'T SPEAKING ENGLISH! What an A-Hole.
Other Stuff
The Tucson Folk Festival continues this evening. As usual, KXCI is broadcasting it. I think it's one of the best things they do all year. You can Listen Live at kxci.org. They had an act from Bisbee last night, Nowhere Man and Whiskey Girl. I thought they were better than the headliners.
This week's Tucson Weekly has a must-read story: Losing the Drug War. Also from the Weekly:Someone Actually Thinks Jan Brewer Should Run for Vice-President.
Is there really any such thing as Must-See TV ? Probably not, but this comes close. Bill Moyers had Luis Alberto Urrea on his show this week. Urrea is the author The Devil's Highway, and much else. They talk about the Border, immigation and the MAS program at TUSD. You can watch it here → "Between Two Worlds: Life on the Border." If you've got 4 hours to kill, I also recommend Frontline's series Money, Power and Wall St.
Well, that's all I got. See ya' in the comments.
