We all know that Mitt has been flip-flopping like a fish on a dock, but there is the question of how to make him pay the costs of that. There may be many ways, but here’s a fun one: Pretend he hasn’t been doing it, and make him own it.
I think it’s particularly useful in debates. Just talk as if the original view is his current one — after all, you can cite sources. As in:
Obama: Of course, Mitt, I know you agree with me that a woman has a right to choose.
Mitt’s option 1:
Mitt: You know I changed my position and no longer support that.
Obama: Oh, well, I certainly take you at your word that you’ve changed positions, but you were correct back then, anyway.
Mitt’s option 2:
Mitt: I never said that.
Obama: Well, you did on …
Mitt’s option 3:
Mitt: [ignore and continue]
Obama: [allow statement to sit and bug the base]
None of these are very good options, really, and all of them would be fun to watch. And all of them would put a lot of focus on his inconsistencies. Even his defenders would have to be arguing that he’s changed a lot.
