You know, sometimes I feel like the whole country's gradually moving forwards. And it's true, in some ways at least. The population's coming around to gay marriage, the constant wars are unpopular, whatever. But economically, the GOP wins. They've been winning for a very long time and they're not going to stop. Tax rates are low as hell. Social spending? Barely exists, even with Obama as prez. And the MIC chugs on and on, no matter what.
Every single person seems to believe their taxes are higher than ever. But they're not! Actually, their wages are shrinking (adjusting for inflation)! Everyone seems to think unions are a greedy bunch--they basically attribute all 1%er qualities to the "union thugs." So many people rant about what they call socialism, even when it just means protecting every citizen's right to live ("LET HIM DIE!") People are convinced that President Obama is some uber-left winger who hands out free money to poor people and robs hard-working citizens on a regular basis. Republicans win the message war on the economy. Every time. No matter what the numbers say. Scott Walker's jobs record? Who cares, the GOP is good for the economy. Right? I heard it somewhere so it must be true! Man, statistically Democrats are much worse for the economy than Republicans, right? I heard it somewhere so it must be true!
Now Republican-backing corporations--er, people own our entire system. And no matter who the president is, Republicans win, austerity wins, corporate greed wins, and we lose.
What can we do? I don't fucking know. But I just needed to vent a little.
