Ringin' that panic bell, again...
From the St. Cloud Times, via Minnesota Public Radio:
Rep. Michele Bachmann says the Muslim Brotherhood, the international Islamist movement that recently came to power in Egypt, has made "deep penetration" within the U.S. government, and she wants an investigation of its influence within five federal agencies.
The Muslim Brotherhood, perhaps the world's most influential Islamist organization, has long sought to unite traditional Islam with modern democracy in Middle Eastern nations. Its global influence further increased when one of its candidates, Mohamed Morsi, was declared winner of Egypt's 2012 presidential election.
But Bachmann, R-Stillwater, and four other members of Congress see the Muslim Brotherhood as a domestic threat.
Jeez, I never thought I'd see the day when the Muslim Brotherhood was making American foreign policy. What surprises me most is that the Muslim Brotherhood is still signing off on all that US aid to Israel. That's going to get them in trouble at home.
Of course presidential administrations of all sorts have always had contacts with Muslims. (Remember those photos of Donald Rumsfeld meeting with Saddam Hussein during the Reagan era? Or Reagan sending National Security Advisor McFarland to Iran with a cake?) It's sort of necessary to have access if you want to run an effective state department or intelligence operation.
I'll bet if Bachmann digs around real hard she'll find CIA and military intelligence relationships with Muslim Brotherhood figures, too. She says the Muslim Brotherhood's "penetrated" the US government, but so far she hasn't specifically alleged that Muslim Brotherhood contacts are actually steering CIA policy.
I guess she's saving that for next week. Doesn't it make you feel better that someone as credible and discreet as Michele Bachmann is serving on the House Intelligence Committee? Her fellow Republicans put her there because they thought it was the best way to keep her out of trouble.
Jeez.
