or any other hater, liar, abuser. I received this Simple Genius idea in my inbox today from Fast Company.
But what is the Internet, if not a vehicle for vigilante justice? After seeing the outpouring of hate on Twitter, five young Swedish designers decided to build a website that would leverage the power of the Interweb to defend Ocean. “We noticed that a lot of people sent just awful replies to Frank Ocean on Twitter, becoming sort of a dark Twitter-based undercurrent that only reached Mr. Ocean himself, unless you actively sought these people out,” explain the group’s leaders, Martin Löfqvist and Jacob Åström, over email. “And very few people did. We wanted to lift this rock and expose these people and their hateful messages to the world.”
We habitually think of the Internet as humanity at its worst. But that’s reductive. Sure, the web has made cyberbullying easier, but it’s also enabled some pretty amazing ways to troll cyberbullies. “I used to love the Internet,” Åström writes on his personal Tumblr. “But right now our relationship is in a constant state of crisis.” Chalk this one up as a win.
Head over to the site to send some warm, trollish love. Fight fire with love. Killem with kindness.
Over the years I've learned that the best response to bullies is to call them out show you're not afraid and your your genius to fight back but not stoop to their level -
Another example Bear Love Good, Cancer Bad. Oatmeal's internet solution even raised money for a good cause while saving himself from lawyering up. We could be more creative around here at fighting bad guys + bad information.
Yesterday I received a face book pitch from a "friend" to buy a scroll cut sign of the Ford kid peeing on Obama. The posting said it was very popular and all the proceeds were going to a poor girl who had cancer. I posted the question, "You oppose socialized medicine yet you are using a social medium to ask me to pay for the medical care of a person I don't know. What is the difference?" No reply so far but imagine if every day postings of these ideas were bombarded with questions and refutations? Make em think, make em responsible for what they say.
